Week 4: Monday 9th March “I am the Good Shepherd” (John 10:11)
Jesus calls Himself “the Good Shepherd”. This image isn’t just comforting—it’s an invitation to discover what it means to follow Jesus, to let Him care for us, and to care for others the way He does.
When Jesus says, “I am the Good Shepherd,” He’s using an image that everyone back then would understand. Shepherds were known for sticking with their sheep, guiding them, finding the lost ones, and even risking their lives to protect them. By calling Himself the Good Shepherd, Jesus is saying He really knows us, cares for us, and is totally committed—even to the point of giving up His life. What stands out about the Good Shepherd is the willingness to lay down His life for the sheep. Lent gives us time to reflect on Jesus’ ultimate act of love on the cross. His love chases after us, especially when we’re lost or struggling. The cross shows just how far our Shepherd will go for us—He never abandons us, no matter how tough things get.
Listening for the Shepherd’s Voice
In John’s Gospel, Jesus says His sheep know His voice and follow Him. Lent is a chance to tune out the busyness and really listen for Jesus. We’re invited to get to know Him more—through reading the Bible, praying, or just sitting quietly. Even when we don’t know what’s next, we can trust Him to lead the way.
Being Shepherds to Each Other
Thinking about Jesus as the Good Shepherd is also a challenge for us to care for others like He cares for us. We’re asked to look out for people who feel left out or lost, to show kindness, and to put others’ needs before our own. That’s really at the heart of Lent: serving, forgiving, and loving, not just thinking about ourselves.
Following the Good Shepherd
As Lent goes on, let’s try to trust Jesus, our Good Shepherd. He’s there to guide us, protect us, and love us—more than we can imagine. Let’s listen for His voice, follow where He leads, and try to live out His love with everyone we meet. As we do, we’ll be ready to celebrate Easter with new hope and joy.
Prayer: Jesus, you’re the Good Shepherd who cares for me. Thank you for knowing me so well and loving me so much. Help me listen for your voice and trust you to guide me. When I feel lost, bring me back, and help me look out for others who need your love. Amen.
