Week 5: Monday 16th March  “I am the Resurrection and the Life” (John 11:25)

One of the most powerful things Jesus says in the Gospel of John is, “I am the resurrection and the life.” These words really stand out during Lent, filling us with hope, even when things seem tough. Jesus says these words to Martha at the tomb of Lazarus, just before he brings his friend back to life. It’s more than just a display of power; it’s Jesus telling us who he is and what he’s about. When he says, “I am the resurrection and the life,” he’s reminding us that death isn’t the end. There’s new life, and that promise isn’t just for someday—it’s for right now.

What Resurrection Means for Us

Lent is often about sacrifice, looking at ourselves honestly, and making changes. We remember our limits and the ways the world can feel broken, but Jesus’s words remind us that Lent isn’t just about sadness or giving things up. It’s leading us toward Easter—a celebration of hope and new beginnings. Calling Jesus “the resurrection” means believing he can bring life out of dead ends, and hope when things look bleak. The first Christians found this message totally life-changing, and even today, it encourages us to keep believing that renewal is always possible.

Experiencing Resurrection Day to Day

The words, “I am the resurrection and the life,” aren’t just about the future. Jesus is speaking in the present tense. During Lent, as we practice things like fasting, praying, or helping others, we’re invited to look for resurrection in our daily lives. When we forgive, show kindness, or stand up for what’s right, we help bring life into places that need it.

So Lent isn’t only about giving up stuff or noticing our flaws. It’s also about letting God’s new life fill us up. By turning from old habits and welcoming God’s grace, we get ready to celebrate Easter with open hearts. Jesus’s words bring comfort to people who are grieving, courage to those struggling, and hope to anyone wanting a fresh start. He invites us to trust him, saying those who believe “will live, even though they die.” This gives us strength to face tough times with faith instead of fear.

As Lent goes on, let’s really hold onto what Jesus said. Resurrection isn’t just something we’ll celebrate at the end of Lent—it’s a reality we can live each day. In Jesus, there’s always the chance for new life, and every sorrow can be turned into hope. Let’s keep walking this road, trusting that the one who is “the resurrection and the life” is with us every step of the way.

Prayer: You promise new life, Jesus, even when things look hopeless. As we head toward Easter, remind me that you bring joy out of sadness and hope out of tough times. Help me trust you and encourage others who need a reminder that life can begin again. Amen.
